In recent months, many educators have been traumatized by an increase in violent incidents connected to federal immigration enforcement. In solidarity with our union colleagues in Minnesota and across the country, DCTA educators are taking part in a nationwide Day of Action on Friday, January 23 to demand that ICE stay away from our schools and communities.
All students, regardless of race, background, or ZIP code, deserve to feel safe and welcomed at school with the respect and support they need to learn and thrive. Schools and communities should be places of learning and belonging. ICE does not belong in our schools or our communities.
The actions of the Trump regime and ICE agents in Minneapolis and in cities across the country have unleashed terror and fear in our communities. Many of us watched in horror as masked, heavily armed federal agents shot and murdered Renee Good, a mother of three, in Minneapolis. And just a few miles away, federal agents assaulted and pepper-sprayed high school students on school grounds. Now this administration threatening to invoke the Insurrection Act and unleash the military in Minneapolis.
These attacks are not isolated. Here in Colorado, the Trump administration is targeting our communities by withholding childcare funding, threatening food assistance, depriving communities of access to safe drinking water, and undermining the integrity of our elections. This is a warning sign for all of us, which is why we are standing together across state lines.
That’s why we’re are calling on DCTA members to stand with Minnesota educators by participating in the following actions on January 23:
- Join educators from across the country by wearing blue
- Take a photo. Then, post it online! Don’t forget to tag DCTA!
- Organize a walk-in with your colleagues
- Refrain from making purchases
- Sign the Petition: Keep ICE out of Minnesota Schools
- Urge congress to make schools, churches, and hospitals protected spaces from ICE
- Create or share a post on social media
